Players receive too little to take pay cuts – Kwame Baah-Nuakoh

Chairman of the GFA’s Club Licensing Board, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh has suggested that footballers in the country will be financially burdened once clubs institute measures to toe the line of their foreign counterparts.

Elsewhere, the likes of Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern, and some other top European clubs have implemented salary reduction measures in order to complement their budget in the face of the Corona Virus.

Most of the clubs in the country depend hugely on gate proceeds, through that, they make expenses off which players wages, salaries, and bonuses are a part off.

Whiles some football persons are pleading to players to see light of the situation amidst the spread of the virus, newly signed Eleven Wonders striker Saddick Adams and Elmina Sharks captain oppose the idea of player cuts.

However, former management member of Asante Kotoko, Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh believes the practice will be financially injurious to the local based footballers.

He adds that footballers in the country receive very little in wages so asking them to accept cuts will further deepened their woes.

“Some (clubs) might not even be underpaying the players, however, it is still not a number of money players will be comfortable allowing for a 10% or a 20% slash”, he said.

“The salary still remains low compared to even some other African countries, it will be difficult to say Ghanaian players should reduce their salaries just to help their clubs (survive)” he further disclosed.

The Ghana Premier League is suspended as the whole country has been locked down for close to a month as it battles the spread of COVID-19.
