Peter Waweru Kamaku to officiate Ghana’s Afcon match against Central African Republic.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has designated Peter Waweru Kamaku, a Kenyan official, as the referee for Ghana’s final match in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The game will take place on September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Stadium, where the Black Stars will face off against the Central African Republic. Both teams are vying for a spot in next year’s tournament.
At the age of 39, Waweru holds a Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics and serves as a university lecturer. He hails from Nairobi, Kenya, and began officiating football matches in the lower divisions of the Kenyan leagues back in 2011.

His career progressed when he joined the Kenyan Premier League in 2013, and he attained the status of a FIFA referee in 2017.
Waweru’s refereeing experience extends to multiple international tournaments, including the AFCON U20 in 2019, AFCON 2019 in Egypt, the 2019 U17 World Cup in Brazil, and the 2021 CHAN, where he officiated the final match.
Since 2017, he has also overseen various CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup, and World Cup qualifying matches.
He has been a member of the pioneer group of 20 referees for the CAF/FIFA Professional Referee since 2020. Assisting Waweru on the field will be his fellow countrymen Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe, with Omar Abdulkadir Artan from Somalia serving as the fourth official.
The match commissioner for the game is Mr. Sanusi Mohammed from Nigeria, while Fatou Gaye will fulfill the role of referees’ assessor.
The medical officer for the match is Dr. Christiana Baah, and Frederick Acheampong, a member of the Ghana FA Executive Council, will serve as the match coordinator.
