GPL Week 1: Kotoko and Ashgold held, WAFA win in SEVEN goal thriller

The Ghana Premier League 2020-21 season week one round of matches got off to a sterling flyer admits lots of cheers and excitement. Even though fans were not allowed to grace and support their respective teams they didn’t disappoint with lots of goals scored across the various match venues.

Ghana Premier League clubs Aduana Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak’s clash was cancelled as a result of surge in Covid-19 cases recorded in the camp of Phobians.

However, that notwithstanding, Legon Cities FC hosted Berekum Chelsea in a late kickoff at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The game produced lots of activities in the first half, Stephen Amankonah drew first blood for the visitors in 22nd minute not later than twelve minutes, Jonas Attuauaye, who interestingly netted the winning goal for the visitors a season ago against Hearts similarly netted the equalizer for his new outfit, Legon Cities.

The second half saw both teams go numb failing to find the ultimate winning goal eventually both settled for a point each.

Former Ghana Premier League champions, AshantiGold failed to make full use of their home advantage sharing the spoils with travelling, Karela United at the Obuasi Ley Clay Stadium.

Karela’s Diawisie Taylor tasked with the mandate of leading the lines shot his side into an early lead in the 4th minute before Appiah McCarthy restored parity for the home side, new signing Hans Kwofie put the home side in the lead on the 45th minute mark heading into half time.

It wasn’t after recess that the away side’s incessant pressure paid off in the 59th minute through a Samuel Ofori goal. It looked as though, the home side might secure a win but try as they did, the away side were defensively resolute repelling any form of attacks.

In the end, Ashgold will feel hurt the most, allowing three points slip through their fingers but Karela would be the happiest heading back to Ayinase.

Ghana Premier League title hopeful Medeama S.C will look themselves hard in the mirror after this afternoon’s performance against Accra Great Olympics at the T. A Park.

The away side escaped relegation but for the coronavirus, this time around in their first match of the new season, they didn’t disappoint taking a massive point back to Accra in a spirited encounter.

Ali Ouattara shot the Mauve and Yellow side into the lead before Daniel Appiah cancelled out the lead.

The regional clash between, Ebusua Dwarfs and Elmina Sharks lived up to the hype. The two sides were looking to claim regional supremacy but they both had to settle for a point in a fixture played at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Korsah-Akomuah’s 40th minute penalty gave the home side the lead before Richard Mpong brought the away side on level terms. The away side’s Isaac Hammond gave the Sharks the lead after a beautiful stretch of interplay, Rabiu Issah spured the home side’s blushes when he equalized four minutes to end the duel.

WAFA got off to a flying start when they beat a traveling King Faisal side in a seven-goal-thriller at the Sogakope Red Bull Arena.

A 17th minute Konadu Appiah goal put the home side in the early for the first half. The second half produced a whopping six goals with Agbevor Godwin, Boakye Augustine, Lomotey Daniel finding the net for the home side, a brace from Kwame Peprah and a goal from Yakubu wasn’t enough to save the porous away side.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko, record holders of the Ghana Premier League failed to glitter in their opening encounter against a tactically disciplined Eleven Wonders side in a late kickoff in Accra on Sunday.

All eyes were on the Kumasi “Galaticos” to start the season with a win but it turned sour as they could only manage a draw.

An inspired substitution from Eleven Wonders coach Ignatius Osei Fosu saw Boahene go off for Prince Okraku to come on only to cancel out Kwame Poku’s goal.

Dansoman based Liberty Professionals will take on Bechem United at the Carl Reindorff Park, Inter Allies and Dreams FC will fight each other for all three points tomorrow at the Accra Sports Stadium.
