GPL Returns: Hearts of Oak, Kotoko, GoldStars poised for action

The Football Association has announced plans for the resumption of the Ghana Premier League across the various league centers in the country.

The week twenty-three of the league will start on Friday, March 7, to Monday, March 10, 2025.

Following the unfortunate stabbing and subsequent death of Kotoko fan, Yaw Frimpong (Nana Pooley), the association has put in place safety and security assurance protocols across all game venues.

The young supporter was laid to rest on March,6,2025 at the Heroes Park, Baba Yara Sports Stadium with large scores of GFA President, Executive Council members, Chiefs, family, friends, supporters, club officials, sympathizers, and other well-meaning Ghanaians in attendance to sympathize with the family and Kotoko.

I look at some of the tasty duels scheduled for game week 23.

Hearts of Oak vs Young Apostles

It’s been over four weeks since Hearts of Oak last kicked a ball in the Ghana Premier League. However, this weekend they taste league action against the newly promoted side, Young Apostles at the University of Ghana Sport Stadium. Both teams will go head-to-head for all three points up for grabs. For the host, the pain from their exit in the FA Cup a fortnight ago at the hands of Golden Kicks reigns heavily on their shoulder but an opportunity to appease their fans won’t be too much to ask. They sit 4th with title hopes ambitions, having won four in five games at home. The Phobians will fancy their chances against the Young Apostles, who are not bad away travelers. They have picked 8 points from 9 games and 3 wins in their last five games which should inspire hope and belief in the lead-up to this duel in the nation’s capital.

Kotoko vs Legon Cities

The pain of losing a loved one will linger on in the minds of Kotoko following the untimely death of a passionate supporter, Nana Pooley, who has since been laid to rest. This week, they resume football activities as they play Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The team that inflicted their first loss of the season saw them on a four consecutive losing streak and later a four-game winning streak. The Porcupine Warriors have picked three wins from their last five games but four wins in their five home duels. For the visiting team the story is rather on a downslide as they’ve lost their last five away duels a feat new head coach Yaw Acheampong will look to remedy over the weekend against a wounded home team.

Goldstars vs Nations FC

Having been bundled out of the MTN FA Cup by Attram de Visser, second-placed Goldstars will switch attentions to the league as they play Nations FC at Duns Park. They have just picked two wins from their last five games but their home superiority will peak their confidence stepping into this game, 11 from 15 points. Their weekended opponents, Nations FC’s last five games have been rather inconsistent, with just two wins from five. This game has all to play for both teams.

Medema SC vs Bechem United

The appointment of coach Tanko will be the success recipe Medeama SC will be hoping for as he oversees his second game in charge for the club. Their home advantage is one they will heavily rely on as they play the Hunters, who have picked 10 points in 10 games in away duels. The two teams have played on thirteen separate occasions over the last decade which has seen the home team the dominant with twelve wins.
