Ghana Premier League: Match Week 13 Review
Ghana Premier League lovers got an amazing treat as football came early on Friday to usher other matches of the weekend in the ongoing season.
To kick-start these weekend’s fixtures, Karela United fans were left disappointed after full-time proceedings when Kumasi Asante Kotoko put one past them at the Akoon Community Park. The home side needed to win to push themselves up the log but the away side riding on new-found confidence after beating Bechem United knew they had to give everything to get the three points as a Mensah Wellington goal was all but enough to guarantee all maximum points boasting them up to 3rd on the log with Karela languishing in a relegation scramble.
Elsewhere, Legon Cities put up a rather shocking but amazing performance when they battered WAFA at home by a four-goal margin. The home side having drawn last weekend fixture had the sole objective of winning. They brought their A-game to the pitch smashing a WAFA side who in less than a week battered the then table toppers, Ashgold by a whopping six goals at the Red Bull Arena. The Royals fired through, a brace from Cephas Doku, and one each from Nii Addy Ebenezer and Fadilli Yussif but a consolation through Agyepong Samson came too late to impact the scoreline. The home side will build on this momentum lifting them up to 11th with 16 points leaving 7th with 19th as well.
Meanwhile, Elmina Sharks have found a good mojo and it’s definitely working for them. They continued their fine fortunes yet again this afternoon after putting Dansoman based Liberty Professionals in their place by 3 – 1. Tweneboah Benjamin, Alhaji Mustapha, and Owusu Augustine were all on the score sheet for the home side whiles a Mubarak Alhassan consolation came a little too late to provide any sort of competition for the home side. This sees them up to 6th on the table.
On the back of losing away to Samuel Boadu’s Medeama, Accra Great Olympics responded in fantastic fashion posting a two-goal victory over fellow strugglers Ebusua Dwarfs. Both sides prior to this duel had accumulated the same number of points only separated by a position,15 and 16th respectively. But it was the Dade boys who made sure their home superiority counted when goals from Maxwell Quaye and Philip Sackey did the magic for them as they returned to winning ways shooting them a position above the drop zone.
Bottom placed King Faisal and Medeama SC battled each other again. Both sides had different objectives riding into this fixture. The full throttle of the match ended as both clubs drew blank, Ibrahim Osman and Prince Opoku Agyemang failed to get on the score sheet with the match ending in a bore draw. This draw lifts Medeama to the summit of the table pending other fixtures further dumping King Faisal into the relegation scramble.
Former Ghanaian Premier League champions, Aduana Stars and Ashgold shared the spoils in a keenly contested encounter. Both sides knew the three maximum points will do them a world of good but none of them fancied their chances enough to walk out victorious after the full match proceedings. This result helps Aduana Stars to the summit leaving the miners a position below the top four.
Elsewhere, Bechem United failed to make their home venue advantage at the Nana Gyeabour Park count as they played out a goalless draw with Dreams. Coach Danso’s men were coming into this match after losing to the Kotoko away, but failed to know to win this duel against “Still Believe”.Both clubs occupy the 9th and 14th positions respectively after the bore draw.
Meanwhile, a Musa Sule goal proved vital as Eleven Wonders picked up all three points against Berekum Chelsea at the Ohene Ameyaw Park. The home side were unbeaten in their last four games and made sure they added to their already accrued points. This win spurs them on to 10th with 18 points whiles this loss marks the fourth for title-chasing Berekum Chelsea, who will have to regroup and come back stronger if they are to have a sniff at the league.
The Accra Sports Stadium failed to produce any match-winner as Inter Allies and Hearts of Oak went at each other. Both sides poised for game action gave fans an interesting spectacle but it was the home side going ahead early in the game as sensational Victorien Adebayor dribbled past two players to assist, Samuel Armah, who handed the Cappelli boys the lead before Mohammed Alhassan restored the Phobia’s to parity from a resulting corner in the dying embers of the game. The draw leaves both sides occupying 13th with Hearts of Oak 8th eyeing a victory against Olympics in the next one.
