GFA awaits government decision on league cancellation
The Ghana Football Association is awaiting advise from the government before making its final decision to continue or cancel the 2019/20 football season.
The President of the Association, Kurt Okraku expressed futility in discussions his outfit have held with Ministry of Sports, Health, and other bodies regarding what’s best for the entire football landscape in the country.
In order for the Football Association to take a definite stand in canceling the league, it will await the government’s clear guidelines for the future of sports in the country.
The President of Ghana Football Association, this week stared in an interview with Accra based Happy FM.
He disclosed that, high-level discussion have been held off which, the Ministry of Health and Sports have been consulted on the next line of action pertaining to the impact of Covid-19 on football in the country.
“We took a decision to speak to the Ministry to intervene because we were heading in the right direction until the COVID-19. Football is perhaps one of the biggest vehicles in solving some of our social problems in this country,”
“Fortunately for us, discussions have gone very well. We are now waiting to hear from the government. Its always been fruitful,” he added.
Mr. Okraku also revealed that frantic deliberations with other continental bodies like WAFU, CAF, and FIFA in relation to COVID-19 have been held to see the way forward.
“Aside from government, we have engaged WAFU, CAF, and FIFA. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has decided to push the FIFA forward from July to an earlier date and so far it has been good,” he said.
Hopefully, Ghana will follow in the footsteps of Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, Mali, Guinea, who have all cancel the league in order to find concrete ways to mitigate the widespread of the coronavirus, which has decimated lots of lives globally.
