So like every other transfer window, Ghanaian Premier League clubs dip into the transfer market to sign players to augment their squad ahead of the new season. The reasons for why clubs partake in this seasonal practice is varied from one to another.
In Ghana, the transfer market always has a way of arousing the excitement of club fans of the league, one such transfer that piqued the interest of lovers of the league involved, WAFA’s Konadu Yiadom.
The towering defender made headlines for a period of stretch following a tussle for his signature between two of Ghana’s most glamorous clubs in the league, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kotoko. The Accra-based side were said to have agreed on a deal for the player and from all indications, it was clear he would move to the rainbow side ahead of the new season but somewhere along the line, Kotoko reared their head to gazump the move. This development, however, got fans of Hearts of Oak on edge after they thought they had wrapped a deal for the services of the defender.
The last few hours leading to Konadu-Yaidom ultimately signing for Hearts of Oak were one of the finest moments in transfer sagas, at some point reports went rife that, he and his agent were considering an improved offer from Kotoko but in the mix of all these after the dust later had settled he chose, Hearts of Oak. A big coup for them but a loss for their bitter rivals.
So, why did this transfer garner lots of talking points amongst other transfers that had happened earlier in the season and were still in line as well as the multimillion-dollar question of what the player brings to the table following his 3-year deal with Samuel Boadu’s side?
Well for starters, the player’s exploits in the league over the years is one that cannot be swept under the carpet. He has done immeasurably well for himself and it was no doubt that he had to be named the captain of the Sogakope-based club.
Konadu started off with WAFA SC and made over 80 appearances, a consistent performer, with bags of experience underneath his belt, his composure, leadership skills, and aerial ability to mention a few of his traits would inure to the good of the continental club masters, who will partake in this year’s CAF Confederations Cup, a perfect opportunity for the young lad to showcase his many talents to a more significant match audience considering his manager believes in helping the local league grow in terms of quality.
Hopefully, he thrives under the pressure of playing for a big club and prove the naysayers wrong when the upcoming season commences in September 2022.
