Ghana Premier League side, Medeama SC successfully unveiled their new coach, Ignatius Osei Fosu after weeks of intense negotiations and speculations in the local media.
I look at this new appointment and am happy about this to some extent, in my last piece, I wrote in relation to Medeama SC, I remarked that the top hierarchy needed to appoint a pragmatic coach amongst other traits as such I believe this new coach envelope all those qualities.
A sneak peek at the Tarwkwa based club provides one with the opportunity to question why up until now, they haven’t won the most coveted trophy, the Ghana Premier League thus far but the reasons are glare for everyone, in the last two seasons, they came close to winning the trophy but for Anas’expose and Covid-19, which led to the cancellation they were at the summit.
Fast forward to the 2020-21 season, they took turns with Kotoko at the summit but for the resignation of Samuel Boadu, who went on to win the league with Accra Hearts of Oak months later they(Yaw Preko and Acheampong) could have built on his successes but failed in their quest to help the club achieve its ambition.
Coach Ignatius’ exploits with Eleven Wonders is in fine prints for everyone to see (34 games,11 wins,9 draws,14 defeats,33 goals scored,38 goals conceded) but he will need the maximum support from the new board, management, and his squad at his disposal to better these numbers now that he has jumped ship to Tarkwa.
For me, the top hierarchy, fans shouldn’t put the young bull under incessant pressure to win the league in his first season, he will need ample time to build a collective squad capable of challenging Hearts, Kotoko for the ultimate.
Looking at Medeama SC in the just ended league, they finished 5th with 54 points conceding as many as 34 goals which average a goal per game, something, he will need to remedy, if they are to rub shoulders with the best in the country.
Also, his new strike force, which comprises Prince Opoku Agyemang, Ahmed Toure, and Zakaria Mumuni, who contributed almost half of the 34 goals will need to start playing above their game in the coming season.
In midfield, players like Tetteh Zuta, Justice Blay, Kwesi Donsu, Rashid Nortey, Richard Boadu(if he stays) would have to aid the attack to reduce the pressure they are constantly battle with on a regular.
There are a few tweaks needed to ensure that this unit is built on solid grounds for the club to chalk success following their massive cash injection over a sustained period of years.
A new dawn is nigh, hopefully, this is the messiah to lead the Tarkwa faithfuls to the promised land.
