Chris Hughton affirms Thomas Partey is set to participate in AFCON despite injury concerns.
Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, has confirmed that midfielder Thomas Partey will be available for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Responding to speculations that Arsenal might hold back Partey due to his ongoing injury rehabilitation, Hughton stressed that clubs have a mandatory obligation to release players for international competitions, putting an end to any speculation.

Although Partey is recuperating from a muscle injury sustained post the October international window and has just started light training, his return to Arsenal’s active squad is anticipated next year.
Nevertheless, he remains part of Ghana’s 55-player provisional squad for the AFCON.
Hughton pointed out that, as per regulations, clubs like Arsenal, managed by Mikel Arteta, must release players for national commitments during the AFCON.
He mentioned on talkSPORT, “The AFCON is slated for January, and countries naturally expect their players to report for camp. Clubs essentially have to comply.”
He further elaborated that, while clubs might sometimes negotiate specifics, like a delayed arrival for a player, the overarching rule remains: they must release their players.
Ghana finds itself in a challenging group alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique for the AFCON. The potential contribution of Thomas Partey, contingent on his recovery, could be crucial for Ghana’s aspirations.
The tournament is set to occur between January 13 and February 11, 2024.
