CAF rejects Cape Coast stadium for Medeama’s CAF Champions League group stage fixtures

CAF rejects Cape Coast stadium for Medeama’s CAF Champions League group stage fixtures.

The Cape Coast Stadium has been denied approval by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host Medeama SC’s CAF Champions League group stage matches, according to multiple sources.

A recent inspection by a CAF team found that the Cape Coast Stadium does not meet the necessary criteria for hosting senior international matches, including CAF inter-club group stage games.

As a result, it has been formally prohibited from being used for CAF interclub competitions in the 2023-24 season and other CAF/FIFA men’s senior national teams competitions.

Medeama has been instructed to select an approved venue by CAF for hosting the group stage and knockout rounds of the CAF inter-club competitions in 2023-24.

The inspection report revealed that various areas in the stadium require renovation and upgrades to meet CAF’s standards and modern football stadium requirements.

The only stadium in the country that meets the requirements for hosting CAF senior international matches is the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Medeama is part of Group D in the competition, competing against the defending champions, Al Ahly SC, Algerian champions CR Belouizdad, and Tanzanian giants Young Africans.

Their first group game is against Al Ahly in Cairo, followed by a home match against Belouizdad at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Their subsequent home games will be against Young Africans and Al Ahly, in that order. The CAF Champions League group stage matches are scheduled to kick off on November 25 and 26, 2023, and conclude on March 1 and 2, 2024.
